It is a promise by the named guarantor to repair, replace, reimburse or otherwise handle specified faults under stated conditions. It is only as broad as its written cover and exclusions.

When buying from a trader, the car must be as described, of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. A warranty cannot remove those rights or force you to use the warranty instead.
Trader or private seller
Consumer Rights Act protections generally apply to trader-to-consumer sales, not a genuine private sale. The advert should identify the seller type; ask if anything is unclear before paying.
Warranty checklist
Ask for the complete terms in a durable format and check:
- The guarantor's legal name, address and contact details
- The exact duration, start date, mileage limit and UK territorial cover
- Covered components, claim limits, excesses and labour-rate caps
- Exclusions for wear and tear, diagnostics and pre-existing faults
- Servicing requirements and which repairers may be used
- The authorisation and claims process before repairs begin
- Transfer, cancellation and complaints terms
